I have been making the case for good assessment for a couple of years. There are definite pros and cons as you’ll see if you take a look at the following article published in Academe: A Progressive Case for Educational Standardization. I’d love to start a discussion about any of the ideas listed in the article, such as the criticism that “”any attempt to apply such a common standard to colleges will inevitably result in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ straight-jacket that will destroy what is most distinctive about our institutions and the heterogeneous student populations that they serve,” or the claim that assessment done well demystifies and democratizes education.
